Baseline First — Before you can spot deception or emotion, you need to know how someone behaves normally. Spend the first few minutes of any interaction simply observing. Clusters, Not Singles — A single gesture means almost nothing. Look for clusters of 3+ signals that point in the same direction. Context Matters — Crossed arms in a cold room is not the same as crossed arms during a negotiation.
Day 1-2: Watch people in a café. Note hand positions, posture shifts, and head tilts without interpreting them. Day 3-4: Start logging clusters. When someone shifts posture, what else changes? Eye contact? Hand position? Day 5-7: Practice with a partner. Have them tell you two truths and a lie while you observe their baseline shifts.
Over-interpreting a single gesture (e.g., "they touched their nose, they must be lying") Ignoring cultural context — gestures vary widely across cultures Forgetting your own body language — others read you too
