The science behind reading people
No mind-reading, no folklore. Every skill we teach traces to published research and can be observed, coded, and tested — so training produces a measurable before-and-after, not a vibe.
The Method
Built on Published Research, Not Intuition
Every skill in the BodyLytics curriculum traces to published research on nonverbal behavior — and every one of them can be observed, coded, and tested.
I · The Lineage — Where It Comes From
Micro-expressions · Facial Action Coding
Identified seven universal emotions that flash across the face in 1/25 of a second, and catalogued the 43 facial muscle movements that produce them.
Ekman & Friesen, Facial Action Coding System (1978)
FACS at 46: what has held up →Behavioral Analysis · 25 Years FBI Counterintelligence
Documented how limbic responses drive behavior under pressure — baselining, comfort and discomfort read in clusters, proven in the field rather than the lab.
Navarro, What Every BODY Is Saying (2008)
The framework at the negotiating table →Proxemics · Cross-Cultural Anthropology
Mapped the distance zones people keep — intimate, personal, social, public — and showed that comfort distances shift by culture. Violating them registers before a word is spoken.
Hall, The Hidden Dimension (1966)
Proxemics in practice →II · The Framework — What Practitioners Learn
01
Baseline
Establish what normal looks like for this person, first. Deviation means nothing without it.
In practice
The guest who's suddenly quieter than they were at check-in.
02
Clusters
Never read one signal in isolation. Three or more, together, before any conclusion.
In practice
Crossed arms in a cold lobby is temperature. Crossed arms, jaw tension, and distancing is a complaint forming.
03
Comfort / Discomfort
The fundamental axis. Every signal maps to it before it means anything more specific.
In practice
A counterpart's feet turn toward the door long before their tone changes.
04
Congruence
When words and body disagree, the body wins. Weight the channel that's harder to fake.
In practice
"Everything was fine" delivered with a half-second lip compression is a review you haven't read yet.
III · Measurement
Why It's Measurable
Codable
Every behavior we train is observable and codable. If two trained observers can't agree on it, we don't teach it.
Tested
Staff are assessed on recognition accuracy before and after training. The delta is the result. How we benchmark →
Certified
Certification requires demonstrated skill on assessment — not attendance.
Reading people is probabilistic. We train accuracy, not mind-reading. Setting the record straight →
